Class: Hollow Forms in Silver Weekend Workshop

Experience Required: Solid basic soldering experience, including at least the fundamentals of bezel making for cabochons. This class is capped at 6 students

Hours: Saturday, Aug 24 – Sunday, Aug 25, 2019 – 10 am – 5:30 pm with a brief lunch break

Hollow form jewelry allows artists to build more architectural, larger work without the weight of a solid object. From lentils and other bead forms, to box clasps, hollow rings, and pendants, these box-like objects add a dimensionality to your work unlike any other. We’ll work on simple forms and then move on to more complex, decorative elements. Students should have a strong basic understanding of soldering, sawing, and filing, and should bring all materials to the first day of the workshop (or purchase the metals as part of your registration).

Materials/Tools List

METALS (Bring your own or use the “with materials” option below to have these items provided as a kit – these will cost you roughly $75-80 if ordering from Rio Grande):

  • 6” x 2” sheet of 22 g Sterling or Fine Silver
  • 6” x 3” sheet of 26 g Sterling or Fine Silver
  • 2’ – hard wire solder
  • 3’ – medium wire solder
  • 1’ – easy wire solder

While some shared hand tools are available, it is strongly recommended that you bring your own basic kit. You will want at least:

  • Good quality fine and/or extra fine large and small barrette and crossing files (half round will do in place of crossing) – you’ll want a file handle – we’re filing a LOT in this class!
  • Flat, half round, and needle nose pliers
  • A good 3” or 4” depth saw frame
  • 12 – 2/0 saw blades
  • Sandpaper – 1 each – 400, 600, 1000 grit sheets
  • Ultra-fine point black sharpie
  • Measuring tools (dividers, small ruler, etc.)
  • Shop towel

Optional for decorative elements & findings:

  • Gemstones and appropriate settings and/or bezels
  • Hanging beads (drilled pearls, gemstones, etc.)
  • Bits of gold, bi-metal, or mokume gane sheet for a reversible hollow form (we’ll be doing patterned reversible, but this adds extra bling)
  • Sterling silver wire and tubing for hinges/other details
