Captivating Captures: Trompe L’oeil & Ornamental Bezel Embellishments (3-Day Workshop)
By now you’ve got the basics down for traditional walled cabochon settings, and perhaps you’ve constructed some step bezels, but you want something with even more flair. In Captivating Captures you’ll take the structure of a basic double-walled step bezel and modify it two ways: For the first setting we’ll create a Trompe L’oeil (dimensional illusion) effect using a series of hand tools. For the second, we’ll work with decorative gallery wire to craft a wedding-cake like effect to which you can add as little or as much “icing” as you want (including options for adding side stones to the body of the main setting).
• Trompe L'oeil Modified Shoulder/Step Bezels – These are some clean, simple modifications to traditional walled bezels (for cabs OR faceted stones) which make the bezel appear to have far more extensive construction than it actually did, and adds a lot of flair and drama to the setting while still retaining the basic structural stability.
• Decorative Shoulder/Step Bezels – Gallery wire and other decorative elements (gold balls, small cabs, cutaways, etc.) turn a basic step bezel into something glamorous – particularly elegant with transparent faceted stones, but also useful for large statement cabs.
Skills Required: Advanced beginner and above – strong solder control and filing skills needed, and attendees should have successfully created several cabochon bezels or equivalent, previously.
